Mark D Smith BHB MBChB MMedSci FRACSDr Mark D Smith

Dr Smith is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital with specialist training and experience in laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal and weight loss surgery and other advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr Smith completed medical school and specialty General Surgical training in New Zealand. He was convocated as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2005. Following his General Surgical specialty training he undertook further specialty training in surgery of the liver and bile ducts in Edinburgh, Scotland; and Bariatric and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery in Oregon, USA. He also completed a Master of Medical Science Degree in evidence based medicine.  Following this, Dr Smith worked in the USA for two years as a specialist bariatric surgeon at Oregon Weight Loss Surgery, a certified bariatric center of excellence.

In 2011, Dr Smith chose to return to New Zealand to raise his family and to establish the bariatric surgery program at Southland Hospital, later Southern DHB. He has conducted extensive research in to improving the safety of bariatric surgery and published multiple peer reviewed articles and book chapters. These include Surgical options for failed laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding in the upcoming American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery textbook.

In 2018, Dr Smith relocated to Dunedin Hospital to join the regional team treating cancers of the stomach and oesophagus. He continues to provide the bariatric surgery service for Otago and Southland through Mercy Hospital Dunedin and Southland Hospital.

Dr Smith’s current surgical practice involves the application of advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques for weight loss surgery as well as the treatment of oesophageal and gastric cancers, gastro-oesophageal reflux, hernia, and gallstones. Dr Smith is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Obesity Surgery Society of Australia and New Zealand, and OraTaiao – The New Zealand Climate and Health Council.

Dr Smith is the proud father of two beautiful girls and enjoys cycling, skiing and surfing in his spare time.

Renee Ladbrook PGDipDiet BSc

Renee Ladbrook is a private practice dietitian specialising in weight loss.  She is also the director of Renovate Nutrition Limited, conveniently co-located in our premises at 81 Don Street, Invercargill.

Renee was born and raised in Southland and completed her undergraduate Bachelor of Science major in Human Nutrition at the University of Otago in Dunedin and postgraduate dietetics training in Christchurch.

Renee has extensive experience in dietary weight loss and has previously worked for the Canterbury District Health Board at Christchurch Public Hospital, the Christchurch Diabetes Centre, private practice and as a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian in the United Kingdom.  She is a member of Dietitians New Zealand and a contributing member of the Dietitian New Zealand bariatric special interest group.

Renee returned to Southland in 2011 to establish the nutrition component of the Southland Hospital bariatric surgery program.  She has recently opened Renovate Nutrition Limited in Invercargill which provides specialist nutritional advice for weight management and any medical condition requiring therapeutic dietary input.  Renee also offers convenient and specialist nutritional support for Southland clients contemplating weight loss surgery with Aspiring Bariatrics Laparoscopy and Endoscopy Limited.

Josephine Greer MDiet PGDipDiet BScJosephine colour

Josephine Greer provides the nutrition support for Dunedin patients of Aspiring Bariatrics Laparoscopy and Endoscopy Limited.  Josephine is a private dietian in Dunedin and director of Nutrition and Life based in Suite 7 Marinoto Clin
ic Mercy Hosptial. She specialises in digestive health and weight loss.

Josephine has a BSc Psychology and Physiology from the University of Auckland and a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Nutrition and Masters in Dietetics from the University of Otago.

Josephine has previously worked at Whanganui Public Hospital as a Diabetes dietitian which started her interest in the psychology of weight loss and finding the best solution to help clients to achieve their weight loss goals.

Josephine is excited to work with the team at aspiring bariatrics to see clients, based in the Dunedin area, who are contemplating bariatric surgery or have undergone bariatric surgery for longterm lifestyle support.

Roger Wandless MBChB MRCP FANZCA

Roger Wandless is a specialist anaesthesiologist based at Southland Hosptial, and Southern Cross Hospital, Invercargill.  Dr Wandless is originally from the United Kingdom but first moved to Southland 1994.  He became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2006.

Roger has a special interest in bariatric anaesthesia and was instrumental in establishing the bariatric surgery program at Southland Hospital.  Roger is currently investigating management of the difficult airway, and pain control after bariatric surgery.

Roger is also an award winning photographer and has published several books of Southland landscapes.  He displays his gallery on line at www.rogerwandless.co.nz and is responsible for many of the photographs on this web site.

Sara DipN

Sara is a senior theatre nurse specialist at Southland Hospital where she leads the bariatric surgery team.  Sara also works as a first surgical assistant for complex laparoscopic operations at Southern Cross Hosptial, Invercargill.

Sara obtained a Diploma of Comprehensive Nursing from Southland Polytechnic in 1996, and is currently studying towards a Master of Nursing.  Sara has over 15 years experience as a Registered Nurse, working at Southland Hospital in the Operating Theatre, Day Surgery Ward, Surgical Ward, and as a District Nurse in the Winton Area.

Sara grew up in Southland, and enjoys the country and outdoor lifestyle of walking, swimming and attempting to fish with her husband and their children.

Sharon Smith BHSc (Nursing)Sharon Smith

Sharon graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1997.  She has worked extensively on both medical and surgical wards in the public and private hospital settings throughout New Zealand.  Sharon also worked in Needs Assessment and Service Co-ordination at Waitemata District Health Board, Auckland, and as an RN Case Manager – Care Co-ordinator at Adventist Medical Centre in Oregon, USA.

Sharon is the practice manager and practice nurse for Aspiring Bariatrics Laparoscopy and Endoscopy Limited.  She is also a full time mum of two, and is completing her National Certificate in Small Business Management at SIT, Invercargill.

Sharon enjoys spending time with her family, cycling, skiing and sewing.
